iPhone 4 most popular camera on Flickr

The iPhone 4 is the most popular camera #1 (based on EXIF image data) on Flickr (as of 25th October 2011).

Also, the iPhone beets the array of smartphones and recognises you are in the house.

The Flickr community of photographers reveal that the Apple iPhone 4 has overtaken dedicated DSLR cameras such as the Nikon D90 as the most prevalent camera and this is only one year after one year since the iPhone 4 was released.

The Apple iPhone 4 camera is followed by the Nikon D90, Canon EOS 5D Mark II, et al which are all serious cameras.

Flickr says its graphs show the number of members who have uploaded at least one photo or video with a particular camera on a given day over the last year.

However, the Flickr team adds that, “The graphs are only accurate to the extent that we can automatically detect the camera used to take the photo or shoot the video (about 2/3rds of the time).”

The website admits that this is not always possible with camera phones, suggesting they are under-represented and that the iPhone cameras popularity could extend even further.

O2 Health launches “Healthy” to get more people around the UK walking

O2 today announces the launch of Healthy, a new mobile application from its O2 Health unit. Healthy was unveiled at Cancer Research UKs Shine London 2011, the charitys night-time walking marathon and has been developed by O2 Health as a fun and engaging way of encouraging people to live healthier lives through walking.

Healthy is a free mobile application designed to encourage people to walk more often and to make walking more sociable. Once opened, the app tracks the customers progress while walking and displays their walk on a map while also recording how far they have walked and how many calories have been burnt. By keeping a record of each walk the app shows the user how they are improving the more walks they do.

Healthy is also designed to make walking fun by rewarding progress made with badges to collect and a “Keep me Walking” button provides a fun and quirky way of motivating people to keep going with random jokes and facts about walking. Progress can also be shared with family and friends via Facebook directly from the App.

Keith Nurcombe, Managing Director of O2 Health said, “Healthy is the first consumer-focused product from O2 Health and represents our commitment to using technology to help people live healthy and more active lifestyles. It’s an important first step for O2 in the important wellbeing space and the start of many more exciting things to come.”

Healthy was unveiled at Cancer Research UKs Shine London on October 1st. Shine is Cancer Research UKs half or full night time walking marathon, starting and finishing at The O2 in London and raising money for Cancer Research UKs life saving work.

Vicki Blake, Cancer Research UKs Shine event manager, said: “It is fantastic that O2 Health have launched this app at Shine London. Being physically active helps to reduce the risk of cancers of the bowel, breast and womb, as well as other serious diseases.”

“Walking more is a great way to increase your level of physical activity. One effective way of keeping motivated is by setting yourself a challenge. Signing up to a walking event such as Cancer Research UKs Shine event is a great way to keep focused.”

Walking has so many great health benefits. It is a really simple way to increase physical activity and can also help:

· Reduce cancer risk

· Cut risk of heart disease

· Increase cardiovascular fitness

· Improve bone density

· Boost metabolism

· Ease stress

· Lose weight or help to keep it off

Launched in 2010, O2 Health works with the NHS and other health organisations in the UK, using technology to improve care delivery and put people at the centre of their own care. As part of O2, O2 Health is dedicated to supporting communities and encouraging people to live healthy and more active lifestyles.

Healthy is now available to download for free to anyone with an iPhone, regardless of network, through the App store. O2 is also developing a version for Android devices.

How to choose a SIM-only service

When you’re choosing a SIM-only service, you should try and find out as much as you can about the different tariff rates on offer. Work out how many minutes you spend on the phone each month, how many texts you send and receive, and whether you use additional services, such as internet access, social networking sites or downloading music.

Some SIM-only deals offer free calls to people who are on the same network, so if you make a lot of calls to people who share a network, it may be worth choosing this one.

If you decide to change mobile phone service providers, you should also check that there will be adequate network coverage in your area. Most service providers have an online search tool which allows you to check coverage in your area.

What does a SIM-only deal offer?

A SIM-only contract lasts a minimum of 30 days. If you choose this option, you only need to give one month’s notice to cancel the deal if you want to switch to another provider or end the service. You also get to keep your own phone number. There are longer SIM-only contracts on offer, which can range from 12 to 18 months but you can face paying a penalty if you end the service early.
The advantages of a SIM-only deal are:

  • they usually work out cheaper than mobile phone contracts because you’re not paying for the cost of the phone by paying a higher line rental
  • you’re not locked into a tariff which may become expensive compared with other mobile phone deals after a few months
  • they usually offer more call minutes and more texts than a mobile phone contract or Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) service and you don’t have to spend time topping up your phone like you do with a PAYG service
  • you can call other networks at a flat rate, so you don’t have to pay premium call charges. You may also be allowed to call people on the same network as yourself for free
  • many service providers allow you to get itemised billing and some allow you to manage your bills online for free
  • you can often get extras such as internet access or access to social networking sites included as part of the monthly fee.

If you want to go for a SIM-only service, you may have to get your phone unlocked first unless you are switching to a SIM-only deal offered by your existing mobile phone service provider.

Pay as you go, PAYG, Pay as you talk, pre-paid mobile phone

A prepaid mobile phone (also commonly referred to as pay-as-you-go, pay-as-you-talk, “pay and go”) is a mobile phone for which credit is purchased in advance of service use. The purchased credit is used to pay for mobile phone services at the point the service is accessed or consumed. If there is no available credit then access to the requested service is denied by the mobile phone network. Users are able to top up their credit at any time using a variety of payment mechanisms.

The alternative billing method (and what is commonly referred to as a mobile phone contract) is the post-paid mobile phone, where a user enters into a long-term billing arrangement with a mobile network operator or carriage service provider (CSP).

A prepaid mobile phone has access to most if not all of the services offered by a mobile phone operator, although the charges for these services may differ from customers with the same operator who have a postpaid contract.

In addition, a prepaid phone has a balance which can be queried at any time, and also topped up periodically. Examples of ways in which the balance can be topped up are the following:

  • a credit card or debit card
  • direct from a bank account using an ATM
  • in a retail store by purchasing a “top-up” or “refill” card at retail. These cards are stamped with a unique code (often under a scratch-off panel) which must be entered into the phone in order to add the credit onto the balance.
  • in a retail store using a swipe card where the balance is credited automatically to the phone after the retailer accepts payment.
  • direct from some open-loop prepaid cards featuring a mobile refill service.

Credit purchased for a prepaid mobile phone may have a time limit, for example 90 days from the date the last credit was added. In these cases, customers who do not add more credit before expiration will lose their remaining balance.
